Tracing ruby programs with set_trace_func

At times you may need to trace a ruby program's execution flow. Ruby's set_trace_func comes handy there.

When saved in a file called trace.rb and executed with $ ruby trace.rb, it outputs

   2011-12-15 00:33:26 +0530 c-return trace.rb:3  set_trace_func   Kernel

   2011-12-15 00:33:26 +0530     line trace.rb:5                     

   2011-12-15 00:33:26 +0530   c-call trace.rb:5        puts   Kernel

   2011-12-15 00:33:26 +0530   c-call trace.rb:5        puts       IO

   2011-12-15 00:33:26 +0530   c-call trace.rb:5       write       IO

*** Hello World

   2011-12-15 00:33:26 +0530 c-return trace.rb:5       write       IO

   2011-12-15 00:33:26 +0530 c-return trace.rb:5        puts       IO

The issue of why there is no x++ in Python is mentioned in the : The depeer question is: why doesn't Python allow x++? I believe it is the same reason why Python does not allow assignments in expressions: Python wants to clearly separate statements and expressions. If you believe they should be distinct, then disallowing ++ is probably the best decision. According to the IAQ, even Bjarne thinks this is the way to go!

I think links are stripped from the comment and thats why it reads weird.

I believe, what he's saying is that python doesn't do ++ because there is no apparent assignment when you do x++ i.e. value of x is being changed without any assignment.
x=x+1 much more clear compared to x++ as there is a clear assignment there.
