The issue of why there is no x++ in Python is mentioned in the : The depeer question is: why doesn't Python allow x++? I believe it is the same reason why Python does not allow assignments in expressions: Python wants to clearly separate statements and expressions. If you believe they should be distinct, then disallowing ++ is probably the best decision. According to the IAQ, even Bjarne thinks this is the way to go!
